Whether it is a woman September 03, 2023 - October 21, 2023 | Ota Fine Arts 7CHOME I am drawing a woman. There was always a bit of hesitation to affirm this, but viewers often perceive it as a woman, so I did not deny it particularly. Although I have never drawn their faces and bodies thinking “this is a woman” or “let’s draw it like a woman”, almost all of their clothes were skirts. This is because I did not feel like drawing trousers. It is not that I want to specifically draw a skirt, but I also do not want to draw them nude. In other words, the skirts (clothes) were positioned as ‘a cloth to wrap up the breasts and crotch’... Read more -

[Ota Fine Arts Tokyo] Tsuyoshi Hisakado: River
20 Aug - 8 Oct 2022 Ota Fine Arts is delighted to announce Tsuyoshi Hisakado’s first exhibition in four years in Tokyo. Having experienced the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake, Hisakado’s artistic practice draws from a consideration of the laws of nature and the universe, which are far beyond human wisdom. Hisakado, who has a studio in the rural landscape of Kameoka, Kyoto, is at the mercy of heavy rainfall and severe weather, as well as wildlife. While he experiences day-to-day how these things function organically in accordance with the order of the Earth’s larger systems, at the same time, he had a doubt that the rules set by humans are deviating from this natural order. The new works in the exhibition reflect Hisakado’s consistent pursuit of eternity and uniqueness, and also possess ‘aesthetics’ that resonate with the human senses. This idea originates from his interest in nature, the earth and the universe and little events that occur in our daily lives. Read more -

A journey of femininity December 4, 2021 - February 12, 2022 | Ota Fine Arts, Tokyo "What is femininity? For whom and for what purpose is it a concept? Femininity is the result of a local history, and at the same time, the beginning of it. History is created by the accumulation of choices women have made, or not made, or not been able to make."
A newly written text by an artist, BuBu de la Madeleine. Read more -

This exhibition features recent works on paper by the two artists, which are characterized by their usage of bold colors and multi-layered compositions. Takekawa’s cat Olympics themed solo exhibition at Ota Fine Arts Shanghai in 2017 remains fresh and memorable in audiences’ minds. This new exhibition aims to demonstrate the depth and breadth of Takekawa’s artistic language. By showcasing his creative practice over the past few years, we are privy to his versatility and broad approach in communicating social issues and phenomenon.
With the ongoing global health pandemic, individuals, collectives and society at large are in an "idling state": the accelerator is not stepped on, yet engines are continually running at low speeds. On this occasion, we had a conversation with Nobuaki Takekawa about what he has been up to recently and his personal experience amidst Covid19 in Japan. Read more -
In The Studio: Guo-Liang Tan
Lightness and suspension feature strongly in Guo-Liang Tan’s ongoing body of work encompassing paintings and installations (or, paintings as objects). Compositing traces and creating imprints on a translucent aeronautical fabric, Tan explores how these works could frame and orientate our sense of time, body and memory. We popped by Tan's studio to find out more about his processes and thoughts behind his work. Read more -
In The Studio: Hilmi Johandi
Employing motifs from found, archival images, Hilmi Johandi composites his paintings like he would a stage set, drawing from the process of collage. Playing with differing scales and segregations in space, the various planes in his works suggest a distortion in space and time, bringing about fresh perspectives of familiar symbols. We visited the artist in his studio and had a chat about his recent and ongoing bodies of work. Read more -
