The setting sun is reflected on the flooring of the room with windows, and a person lies in that "red pond" as if he/she is immersing himself/herself in nostalgia. Recently, many of my works are on horizontal canvases with a figure lying down or sitting. So, I wanted to make a work with a vertical composition of a figure standing to have the overall movement of the viewer’s gaze in a vertical line. When it comes to up and down movements, there are jumps and falls, and I wanted to depict a fall. But I tried not to incline too much on the negative impression of falls and drops.
I set a canvas vertically and painted a window at the top of the canvas, and when I painted a handrail assuming something like a narrow balcony behind, it looked like a fall prevention fence on the rooftop. So, I continued painting consciously with the possibility of it looking like a fall prevention fence. I thought it could be used to suggest the idea of falling.
I have always been fascinated with how the floor that reflects light from outside can be seen as a space that extends downward like the deep sea, depending on how the shape of the window is rotated. I thought that this idea could be used in the painting this time. By adding this element, the final image can be seen by incorporating three orientations: lying on the floor, falling from the roof, and jumping into the deep sea].
* Blood from toenails: I cannot explain why. I just wanted to spray blood from the toenails. An accent.
*Reflecting candles on a handrail: At first the white sticks looked like candles and I just wanted to paint flames. After painting, I felt comfortable in terms of the theme. It is an image of a birthday and also an image of death.
*Wrist and ankle bracelets: I like wrists and ankles with bracelets and anklets so I cannot help but paint them. It also tightens visually with the color black. In the violence movie I watched before, they tied people’s wrists and ankles when pushing them off from the railing of a bridge. My painting started to look like that so I made some resemblance.
*Twisted limbs: they were twisted when I realized it. I could fix them because it was a mistake, but I never had it wrong in both limbs, so I left it as it is, liking this creepiness.
*Floating object: Algae (unpleasant algae from Lake Biwa that I used to go to when I was a child), Paramecium (wood grain, female genitals), cotton-like trash in the water (I am not sure if it’s water mold or dead bacteria, but it looks like dust to me so I named it water dust. *I found out later on that there is an aquatic plant called water dust (Ottelia alismoides / Duck-Lettuce). It is an aquatic plant with small white flowers. It actually looks like dust and I like the naming. I want to use it as a painting motif someday).
*Title: At first I was going to title it ‘Going to the Place where the Red Pond is’, but because of the process of the production, I often come up with a title only at the very end. [Snow, Cherry Blossoms or Water Dust] is linked to [Falling, Lying down or Jumping off]. If it looks like snow, it's on the roof, if it looks like cherry blossoms, it's on the floor, and if it looks like floating cotton dust, it's in the water.Exhibitions
