Yayoi Kusama "METALLIC": Yayoi Kusama
Ota Fine Arts is delighted to announce the inaugural exhibition "YAYOI KUSAMA: METALLIC" at our new gallery space in Singapore. The gallery will have a grand opening at Gillman Barracks on 14 September, 2012.
As one of the leading artists well recognised as an avant-garde for her activities from the 50's through to the 70's, Yayoi Kusama has contributed significantly to re-shaping modern art through her unique creations. As an Asian woman who has also suffered from psychiatric difficulties from an early age, she has never stopped challenging herself in the face of a male-centered art world. Her ambiguous presence can be seen as a bridge to connect the world and with work ranging from installation to performance - it is difficult to find another artist capable of matching her originality.
She had her solo exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1998, following by Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). And last year, her big tour of retrospective has started at Museo Reina Sofia. It was followed by Centre Pompidou, TATE Modern and currently is being held at Whitney Museum of American Art until 30 September, 2012.
This exhibition will consist of her latest series of paintings - style is far different from her usual. Started in 2004, the series of "Love Forever" and the latest "My Eternal Soul", these new paintings show the new repetition of motifs and images as if she is pulling away her old trademarks: Nets and Dots. In some works, images are melting into abstruct patterns, and in the others the artist is experimenting a colour Valeur, like vivid red and blue on metallic canvas. Early works from this series were exhibited as the high-light at both TATE Modern and Whitney, they strongly proved the artist's professional attitude that her long-established reputation does not stop her from creating and challenging new works.
